Van Gogh painted for roughly a decade. The Art Institute's Bedroom is the second of three versions he made of the same room in Arles; he painted it while at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, working from the first.
He described the picture's intent in letters to his brother Theo as the expression of rest, and chose the colours to carry that rather than to record the room accurately.
