Monet painted the water garden at Giverny for the last thirty years of his life, returning to the same pond in different light until the horizon disappeared from the pictures entirely.
The earlier Beach at Sainte-Adresse, painted in 1867, still has a horizon, a shoreline and weather — it shows where he started.
